As parents we must be concerned about drug and alcohol abuse in schools. It is happening and usually it happens right in front of parents. That means you need to know the signs so that you can act as early as possible.

The following is a list of the most common signs of drug and alcohol abuse in teens.

Physical signs of abuse:

  • Dilated or constricted pupils
  • Bloodshot eyes
  • Change in appetite
  • Change in sleep patterns
  • Sudden increase or decrease in weight
  • Deterioration in physical appearance
  • Unusual smelling breath or body odor

Behavior signs of abuse:

  • Drop in school performance
  • Need for money, even to the point of stealing
  • Suspicious or secretive behavior
  • Sudden change of friends or activities

Psychological signs of abuse:

  • Personality changes
  • Mood swings
  • Angry outbursts
  • Periods of hyperactivity
  • Lack of motivation
  • Paranoid behavior

These signs are indicative of a potentially serious problem. They may be a result of drug or alcohol abuse or a different serious problem. However, these signs should not be ignored.
