I’ve been working in a home for boys w/ ODD this summer and can only say I wish that I’d had the benefit of your video presentations from the outset. I have a 23 year old, so i have experience as a parent, but never had to deal with an ODD child before…Your ideas are dead on! I am now understanding how and why to act in the face of oppositional behavior in whatever form it comes.

This video really helped me. It was a topic I recently discussed with our family therapist. I allow my child to engage me in dialog which takes me out of the control seat. Thank you for the reminder and the advice.

I, also, wanted to tell you that I still use the word “and” when my children (and students) do not want to comply with what is being asked of them. It is such a simple tool that is extremely effective.

This is the technique that I used with my daughter who has Reactive Attachment Disorder, and it worked wonderfully! The cursing stopped immediately, and has not been a problem for three years now.

Hi Dr Anthony,
Thank you for free video. my 16 yr old.does not follow any rule. He is always bulling and fighting at home. Using foul language all the time. He was going for counseling not going from last 2 months. I try to give consequences but does not matter to him. he does what he want. he has been taking summer class because he failed. but he has been going late everyday and today he did not go at all. Need help

What if swearing is his adjective for just about anything? Even if he is not angry or being disobedient, and I suppose it could just be a “cool” habit?

My son follows me, room to room and continues the cursing, alternating with begging, and insults. I can walk away. go to my room and he will yell outside my door. I often have to completely leave the house, though at times he has grabbed the keys, so I cannot.

Thanks for the tip.What do I do if my teen threatens to run away from home or commit suicide…? I get scared to set any consequence because it seems to back fire.
